Before I decided to leave my favorite coffee shop, following a productive sketching session, a rotund and mature lady sat at a neighboring table. She brought only her purse, muffin and coffee to her table. She sat alone and surveyed the room with great curiosity as she chomped her muffin. She was worth sketching because she stood out among the myriad of geeks staring silently at their laptop screens. She also looked like she was really enjoying her muffin.

Risk takers

Without the existence of risk takers the world would be a dull place. Dreams would never be realized. None of us would ever have the chance to live vicariously through anybody. That's what novelists contribute to our otherwise safe and mundane lives. That's why TV shows like BIO are so popular. Risk takers are interesting. They live on the edge. They give us loads of reasons to feel safe and secure, especially when they take huge tumbles. Risk takers rarely consider losing, they see themselves succeeding. That's what carries them forward step by step. Their 'all or nothing' attitude is their greatest asset. Risk takers give us all hope, gotta love 'em.

Just a thought ... the more I learn about how the English language works, the more I am in love with it. The concept of developing a style of writing intrigues me. Right now I'm in exploration mode regarding the technical side of writing. My next step will be to explore the writing process. Recently an idea for a book did plant itself in my brain, but I'm not sure how to pull it together at this point. I'm optimistic that I will find my way; it'll be an interesting journey.

It's snowing heavily outside today; the first snowfall of the season. I love the snow, but not driving in it to get to the coffee shop. A coffee shop can be the perfect place to rest up before another slog through the harsh winter elements. Hot chocolate is a top seller these days. Mmmmm hot chocolate.

Have you noticed how quiet the atmosphere has become in your local coffee shop? Certainly people continue to meet for coffee; now they're engaged in digital conversations. As a result the most uninteresting information is uploaded. Who really wants to see your half eaten lunch online? Here's an idea: get together, eat, drink and converse the old fashioned way. Afterward, text 'thank you' notes to one another. Presto! What's old is new again.

Don't remain to be seen

Once a week I like to buy myself a coffee, sit in a dark corner and sketch people on my iPad. Most of my subjects are engaged in conversation, focused on their laptop screens, or absorbed in text messaging; however, I'm never quite sure if my anonymity is maintained. I get the feeling that I am noticed sometimes probably because I feel a bit sneaky. Still I grapple with my composure believing that I appear to be playing a video game, while I rapidly doodle a person (or combination of persons) because it is a heck of a lot of fun.

Sometimes age old wisdom is dispensed at a coffee shop. Maybe this guy is a picky eater. Maybe the wife is a lousy cook. That is not for me to judge. Perhaps all it takes is a few good cooking lessons to save a marriage. Maybe the old wives tale is true; maybe a way to a man's heart is through his stomach. On the other hand, a man's help in the kitchen is never a bad thing. Food for thought.

Cute Little Thing

Very often I will tell my pet how cute she looks, but what does cute really mean? Well cute can mean pretty in an endearing way. Cute can also have a negative meaning: superficially clever. In other words your mom could exclaim "Don't be cute with me" meaning don't mouth off and mask it with a false smile. So what am I really telling my pet when I refer to her as cute? Most often she appears endearing to me, though I do get annoyed by her nose pokes followed by her stares as she waits for me to respond in her favor. I wonder what she thinks of the attention I give to her. Does she think I'm being cute too?

The winter weather is depressing. More often than not the rain splashes down and never seems to stop. I long for summer weather, I'll settle for a single steady ray of sunshine. As days grow shorter with the daylight savings change over we all fall behind. Suddenly it seems the holiday season is upon us and the money in the bank won't buy all the gifts on our list. Maybe I can give drawings as gifts again this year. Maybe not, that went over like a lead balloon last holiday season. My spirits may be dampened, though my creative resolve helps me to soldier on.

Did you say WALK?

Walk, talk, bark, park ... any word within that ball park (yes, even ball park) can set my dog off from a seemingly sound sleep to an absolute frenzy. It's that secret "ON" switch that cannot be toggled off once you've hit it. I kid you not, she will run around the room and stop and stare directly at you and bark if you say the "W" word only once. Her behavior can drive you batty, especially if you just sat down with a cuppa tea. If you don't give in she will get into the smelly "gift" giving mood. When she's got you over a barrel you might as well just leash her up and take her outside, even for a few minutes. Bring her in, feed her and she'll be back in your lap sound asleep in no time. A small price to pay for the otherwise unconditional love she gives you.

I'm trying something different these days: quick 10-minutes or less sketches on the iPad. I want to get away from the perfectionism thing. Hey, I heard that comment from the back of the room. Ok, so my artwork is far from perfect. What I mean to imply is that I don't want heavy concentration on detail to get in the way. If I can release myself from my personally self-critical eye, then maybe I can improve my art on some level, at least that's the way I figure it. Don't try to get into my head on this one. Just enjoy the art and don't judge me too closely. Afterall, girls like me just wanna have fun!

This is a quick ipad self-portrait of me in my office. I admit, I embellished a little. The dog and computer are truthful. However, the female character's snazzy blazer, eyeglasses, hairstyle, body shape and (lest we neglect) the background flowers are all embellishments. Why the title change on our blog banner? Simple. I love to draw anything and everything. I don't want to restrict myself to making just a cartoon with a joke line.
